Children Living with Drug and Alcohol Abusing Parents
Reports align with viewpoint of Narconon California drug educator
GLENDALE, CA, August 30, 2009 /Parenting PR News/ -- The headlines confirm it; drugs killed Michael Jackson. Who can forget the heart-broken faces of Michael's children? That same look of loss drifts across the faces of many children every day. Parents die at the hands of drunk drivers; from drug overdoses, cirrhosis of the liver and diseases brought on by needle use. Few of these deaths make the headlines, but the children left behind suffer the same loss.
How does drug abuse affect children and what can be done about it? "Parental substance dependence and abuse can have profound effects on children, including child abuse and neglect, injuries and deaths related to motor vehicle accidents, and increased odds that the children will become substance dependent or abusers themselves." states a report by The National Survey on Drug Use and Health Children Living with Substance-Dependent or Substance-Abusing Parents. In another report Parental Involvement in Preventing Youth Substance Use, from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health support these assertions. "Parents play an important role in preventing substance abuse among youth. Talking with a child about the dangers of substance use and showing disapproval of such behavior is a key factor. It's also essential to stay involved in a child's day-to-day activities."
Roger Davis, Director of Narconon California Drug Education & Prevention commented "Just as we teach our children to never play with fire, let's teach them about the toxic effects of alcohol & drugs. We can prepare our children for the time when someone offers them alcohol or drugs. If they have the truth, they have the power to control their destiny. Parents & grand parents can talk with their kids and share these basic points:
* All drugs can be toxic or poisonous. Drugs & alcohol are not food or nutrition,
& when put into the body, they change the way the body works or the way the
person thinks or feels.
* Drug addiction & alcohol abuse kill creativity and ruin goals.
* Alcohol & drugs hurt athletic and intellectual performance.
Age appropriate discussions can help children make informed choices and decisions based on an understanding of the truth about drugs & alcohol."
