With close to 70 players registered, the youth hockey program in Shanghai has come along way since 2005 when a few hockey parents began with six young players in a small shopping mall rink in the Baoshang district.

The House League and Select teams now practice twice weekly in the state of the art facilitates at the Mercedes Benz Arena and Sonjiang University Arena. There are five House League teams and three Select or travel teams with players ranging from 6 to 17 years of age. The programs follow Hockey Canada training and coaching standards and has truly international participation with kids from: Canada, USA, Sweden, France, Taiwan, Germany, Norway, Finland, Japan, Korea and China.

"We love to see the growth of ice hockey and it's been amazing to witness the program evolved from where players did not even have access to a full sheet of ice to a full fledge program. While Harbin, Beijing and Hong Kong have established systems, Shanghai has limited access to facilities. But this is changing, and we are honored to join other local Shanghai hockey associations, who together are all committed to fostering this great sport in China," says Kevin Parker, President of the Shanghai Thunderbirds Minor Hockey Association.

Players, parents and hockey enthusiasts are encouraged to find out more about the Thunderbirds at: www.shanghaithunderbirds.com.
